Before writing begins, logistics are agreed (timing, availability, publishing route, fees) followed by a creative discussion to establish the kind of book the author wants. This editorial discussion lays the foundations and blueprints for the book, giving both author and ghostwriter a clear idea of the collaboration ahead.

As a quick rule of thumb, between three and nine months, though the timeline depends on the author. Some prefer to work quickly and intensively, while others favour a longer schedule. The process shouldn't be too long as creative energy can diminish over time. Books have been completed in as little as five weeks and taken as long as four years.

What about confidentiality and copyright when working with a ghostwriter?

Accepted Answer

All work remains totally confidential by default and is only mentioned publicly with express agreement. A Non-Disclosure Agreement can be signed. The contract states unequivocally that the book is the author's copyright with no rights retained by the ghostwriter. All recordings, discussions, emails and material can be returned to the author once the book is complete.
